Flight Pattern

Video
2013

I shot this video at the San Francisco dump, where seagulls continually fly overhead, searching for scraps of food in the waste stream. In hypnotic hovering patterns, the birds dive and swoop, forming an avian mass of flock-like activity. As human have slowly taken over the planet, seagull colonies have adapted to urbanization and flourish at every seaport and landfill.

Flight Pattern emerged from this video + imaginary device called The Seagull Translator, which I made while an artist-in-residence at Recology San Francisco (The Dump).
