Handwork

Video, 2006

Description

Handwork is a single-channel affective video projection of the artist as he attempts to learn to crochet. A single shot shows only his facial expressions and upper torso with the hand movements out of frame. His eyes look downwards with concentration and frustration punctuated by irregular breathing, suggesting a sexual act.

Shot against a brick wall and bringing personal intimacy into a public viewing space, this piece directly references Warhol’s Blowjob. Handwork would ideally be projected in the same room as other artwork with the lower edge of the video frame matching the intersection of the floor and the wall. This work is also playing off the notion of the self-indulgent artist.
